Lee Gardens Lee Gardens Lee Gardens Urban Talks Series – Episode 30【Blooming Blessings】The Art & Craft of Hong Kong Floral Plaques
Spotting a multi-story, brilliantly coloured Fa Paai (floral plaque) on the streets of Hong Kong can be a fascinating culture shock for visitors. While large floral wreaths are associated with solemn occasions in Northern China and elsewhere, in Hong Kong and the Lingnan region, Fa Paai represent the ultimate celebration. They serve as vibrant community announcements for festival deities, store openings, and the annual Yu Lan Festival.
During the seventh lunar month, as Yu Lan festivities commence across various districts, these towering structures stand as an unmistakable cultural icon. Combining bamboo framing, paper crafting, calligraphic artistry, and folk aesthetics, Fa Paai is a recognized Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage that acts as a giant greeting card binding neighborhoods together. As urban space evolves, this grand heritage is finding new ways to seamlessly integrate into modern everyday life.
In Episode 29 of Urban Talks, we are honored to welcome Master Choi Wing Kei, second-generation inheritor of Wing Kei Flower Store. Under Master Choi's guidance, participants will learn the principles of bamboo structure, color composition, and auspicious symbolism while crafting their own miniature Fa Paai. Join us in the heart of Causeway Bay to reconnect with this dazzling piece of authentic Hong Kong heritage and take home a personalized blessing.
