Since opening its doors a decade ago, Cupping Room has risen to become one of the city’s most popular coffee shops. Honouring its “Like a Champ” slogan, “The Winner” is Cupping Room’s proudest feature. Stroll into its flagship at Lee Garden One and perhaps you’ll be fortunate enough to run into Cupping Room’s champion, Bosco. 

“Cupping Room’s owner is already a coffee champion. His generous teaching and sharing have nurtured a number of champions here,” he says. “Cupping Room has a comprehensive training programme whereby the apprentices learn from and compete with one another to represent the company in coffee competitions.”

 

 

Nurture Another Champion, Brew Spectacular Coffee

The purpose of such rigorous training is to brew spectacular coffee. Bosco, however, only joined Cupping Room after he’s won the 2020 Hong Kong Barista Championship, adding another star to this coffee shop. Though he’s come so far, Bosco has never forgotten his roots. “My greatest joy is to share my love of coffee with others. This sense of accomplishment remains my biggest driver to this day,” he says with a wide grin.

Cupping Room shares his passion of spreading the gospel of coffee. This is why the Lee Gardens flagship is dotted with coffee paraphernalia plus homemade capsules. 

“Our dream is for customers to bring our distinguished flavours home. That's why we’ve selected the right beans, roast and grind and have placed them into user-friendly capsules so everyone can replicate the Cupping Room experience within the comfort of their own four walls.”

Currently, Cupping Room offers 10 different capsules, of which 6 are seasonal. As for the coffee paraphernalia, Bosco says they’re all handpicked by himself and other baristas. 

“We don’t have a lot of equipment, but we’ve personally tried every single one on the shelf and believe that other coffee aficionados will also love them. Their prices are also very reasonable.”

 

Understand What You Want, Attitude is important than Techniques and Tools

Aside from assuming the role of quality control across all of Cupping Room’s shops, Bosco also spends a lot of his time teaching. This has given him ample opportunity to get in touch with fellow coffee lovers. 

“Aside from the right techniques and the right tools, coffee-brewing is about the right attitude. Whether you’re a professional or amateur, you have to understand what you want. This is a constant reminder to myself too.”
